In 2012, Alex Drexler and some of his friends were having trouble finding the perfect men’s shirt. So, he decided to make it. Alex Mill was a simple idea with simple beginnings (a bakery-turned-shirt shop on Elizabeth Street in Soho), but from there, the brand quickly developed a loyal following of individuals...ones who valued good design and quality.
A few years later, Alex was introduced to designer Somsack Sikhounmuong through his dad Mickey (Somsack’s former boss and mentor), and the three of them teamed up to approach fashion through a new and refreshing lens. Each of them had been hearing the same thing from friends, colleagues and tastemakers alike: that straightforward design - the kind that was unique and accessible - was impossible to find. Not more clothes, but the right clothes.
Collectively, their vision wasn’t all that different from Alex’s original goal - only instead of the perfect shirt, it was now about creating the perfect closet of uniform essentials. And just like that, the Alex Mill of today was born.
Mickey uses this phrase a lot to refer to all the details that go into making our clothes great. The laser focus on design, the attention to detail, the vintage and archival references, the incredible quality and the timelessness of it all. Plus, the fact that we’re resourceful when it comes to our production, our fabrics and our partners. This is the magic that makes us us.
We have a small-but-mighty NYC team who we don’t know where we’d be without. We’re highly collaborative when it comes to work (and beyond - like taste-testing coffee cake and chatting about our new favorite neighborhood attractions). Plus, each and every one of us loves fashion - we dream about clothes and geek out over hems, seams and the way a sweater slouches just like so. Our dream team extends to our store associates in Soho and on the Upper East Side, who are our (and your) heroes out there in the field.
We aren’t crazy about fussy, superfluous things. In fact, we’d go so far as to say that they get in the way, especially when it comes to getting dressed and getting out the door to do the things we love. We have a keen eye for uncomplicated clothing that doesn’t take long to put on - or put together.
